Sun-dried apricots, the fruit Hunza is known for

What to look for when you buy dried apricots from Hunza: colour, ingredient list, and how the fruit is usually dried.

Apricots spread on trays above traditional roofs in a Hunza village

Apricot orchards are part of the everyday landscape of Hunza in Gilgit-Baltistan. In late summer the fruit is picked and, in many households, laid out to dry in the sun so it can be kept through the year.

A straightforward dried apricot list names the fruit and nothing else. Syrup, added sugar, or a strong sulphur smell are reasons to read the label twice. Colour varies with the variety and the drying day; golden fruit is common, and darker fruit is not automatically a fault.

From Hunza sells golden sun-dried apricots by weight, plus the sweet kernel and a small gift pouch. The product page is the place to check the current pack size, price, and whether a seasonal offer is still open.

Once the bag is open, a sealed jar in a dry cupboard keeps the fruit better than a loose bowl. In humid weather, the fridge is the safer shelf.
